Edinburgh Castle                Welcome to Edinburgh!

These pages are for new students - the current students in TESOL Edinburgh would like to give you information and help you to get ready for coming here. We will use this also for some information for current students (particilarly for the beginning of the programme) - the page for "Organise yourself" has some ideas about keeping notes and using online resources.

Please note: this is a site that is continually updated and has information that we think you might find helpful, but it is not official information and if you want to know about applications, references, programme and degree information etc, you should get in touch with the post-graduate office of the University of Edinburgh. How to contact the post-graduate office can be found on

http://www.hss.ed.ac.uk/Postgraduate/index.htm

The University pages about the MEd TESOL programme can be found on  http://www.education.ed.ac.uk/crd/tesol/

You will also find a link to individual course descriptors, and an application form that you can download and send to the post-graduate office.

The online application form for the MEd TESOL (12 months full-time, or part-time options), the Diploma TESOL or the Cert TESOL are available on http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/postgraduate/finder/details.php?id=128

You will find it extremely useful to attend a pre-sessional course in academic writing and other skills you will need to be successful in the degree programme. Get information about our recommended pre-sessional course from http://www.ials.ed.ac.uk/EL/English-Academic/English-for-TEFL-Applied-Linguistics-Language.html

There is a pre-arrival guide available on http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/new-students/pre-arrival-guide

Induction week is the week before the first semester starts. In this week, you'll find out where rooms are, meet the staff, meet former students, get information about email and computers, and lots of important information. Make sure you are there for induction week!

What to bring with you:

There are various things that you could bring with you to make the first semester, and your research (assignments and the dissertation) easier:

  • copies of coursebooks / textbooks you currently use
  • video of you teaching
  • records of lesson plans, syllabus, courses you have taught
  • information about your school, institution, education system
